- A pump in a hydraulic-pressure system, used to build up the requisite pressure for the system. The main hydraulic pumps are normally engine-driven, whereas those for use in a secondary hydraulic system or in an emergency may be mechanically or electrically driven. The hydraulic pump in such an eventuality may also be hand operated. See hydraulic system.
